Regus stayed up long into the night, reading every book in the library of Tusconus that dealt with magic, the creation of the erf, and that made any reference to the three demigods that were taking such a direct hand in his life. His encounter with Homero was extremely troubling. He knew that Homero had told the truth, but him being a Retconjurer felt….dirty. Retconjuration was a banned study. There was a cult that understood its workings called the Deletionists, but they only understood them so they could ferret out those that attempted to learn, turning them to their side, or croaking them. Deletionism was the only allowable form of Retconjuration, as it simply made it so something no longer existed, not changing the nature of the thing. In any case, he thought it best not to run across any of these Deletionists, lest they attempt to remove him from existence. The books on theory and history melded together in his mind, and his eyelids got very tired. He was hoping to find a way to test his abilities, perhaps by waking up and not being a warlord, but as he drifted off to sleep, his mind lost the focus he needed. His dreams were troubled by visions of Hamratio leading a squad of steel statuawies, chasing after him. They yelled out: “Delete! Delete!” as they chased him, perfect images of Dewey X, and Regus dove inside a giant blue box for cover. The blue box flew through the darkness, suspended by strings, held by Homero. The twisting made him sick, but he could not awake from the dream.
--------
”Awake, Regus! This is not a time to dwell on idle dreams.” Hamratio shouted in his ear. Regus woke with a start, the dream still firmly lodged in his mind. ”You must away, dear Regus, there is no rest here for you, save a rest that will leave you quite incarcerated.” The cracked caster shoved a pack into Regus’s hands. ”Go as far away as your move will take you, and I will stall them. I will say you went for a walk and will be back soon, that you wanted to find some flowers for Lady Anex….a rose, or some other named thing perhaps, but you should go at once!”
”Hamratio, what are you talking about?” Regus looked in the pack and found it stuffed full of field rations. They would keep him on the road for four turns or more. It must have taken some doing for Hamratio to get ahold of so many rations without raising suspicion.
”Dear Regus, you are a soldier in mind and form, but form means little when they look beyond to see the man beneath. The King received a little bird today, from our dear friend the Carnival Clown you met in Mediol. He spoke of a wish for peace between our sides, even giving up a few cities that would mean dozens of turns of battles to reclaim, if we can at all, and all for a single price. They want your head, Regus, and all the wonderful things it can do.”
”Surely the king would question giving up a low level warlord in exchange for such peace?” Regus slung the pack over his shoulders and settled his sword and shield around him.
”He did, and the Carnymancer told him the reason why. You see, our dear carnymancer is also a dabbling Deletionist, and he wants you deleted.” Hamratio hurried to the door, and slowly opened it. ”The King was outraged that you are what you are. He swore to deal with you himself, but the Carnymancer insisted that he be present to oversee your demise. Dear Anex will be receiving orders to apprehend you and await the arrival of king and caster alike, which is why it is vital for you to go now.”
”Anex….” Regus thought, wondering if she would even obey such an order. ”I can go to her, she would run away with me, and we could start a new life on some distant side.” Regus headed to the window, sliding one leg out of it.
”Regus, you are a Retconjurer. No king will take your allegiance, the Deletionists will hunt you until they remove you from existence, and even though she is a tough lady, Anex would never be happy abandoning her side, especially to run from it and fight against it. It is heartbreaking for me to see you two like this, such tragedy is not my forte, but it will be best for her if you leave and not force her to confront you.”
”I guess you are right. I would still liked to have said goodbye.” Regus lowered himself down into the bushes outside the window. There was a small gate nearby that was unguarded at ground level. That would be his best chance of escape.
”I will say your goodbyes in time, my friend. Good luck.” Hamratio saluted Regus, and Regus merely smiled. With a nod, he headed for the gate, slipping out of the city, and into the hex beyond. He was a fugitive now, on the run from the side he was popped into. The only side he even knew. He was a fugitive, an outcast, and a barbarian.
What was worse is that he is a retconjurer, and a danger to the entirety of erf itself.
