My point exactly...Haffaton brought it up a lot. I suppose you make a fair point about us not seeing much of Transylvito prior to this, but part of me still thinks they'd be missing casters that had been lost.

There's gotta be a good joke in here somewhere.

WELL, I say, plus one for the apt coining of a name for one of their potential casters. :hattip:

To be fair, it's been implied that Olive caused this deliberately to "prove" just how much better her own discipline is. Saner sides try to acquire as many casters as possible, keeping their own safe at the capital and capturing enemy casters if at all possible. In Slately's own words, Holly Shortcake's death happened because he risked her carelessly.

No problem.

Like Caeser is going to be sad to see Bill go?

Missed the reference of the name on first read through. Nice.

No worries. It is a great pleasure, eh, when you coin something apt, a surge of endorphins.

A question just occurred to me. Is Parson particularly vulnerable to Caeser and his mates?. Is their Signamancy likely to be more effective on Parson because of the whole "Grew up watching Vampire movies" thing?. Here are some "real" vampires, for all money. I know they would scare me extra flocking curly.

Excellent name, though I would think she'd be a shockamancer or a lookamancer.

Oh. Oh man. I really hope that among Shockamancers, casters who are really bad at their job are called Schlockamancers.

"Corman, you can only manage cheap thrills, ineffective twists and shoddy bumps-in-the-night! If it weren't for the fact that you can crank out three times as many of the things as any other caster on the same amount of Juice, I'd disband you here and now, you... you lousy Schlockamancer!"

I've read that, along with most of Card's work. It was the first thing that came into my mind when the doll in the pit was described, although I'd already gotten the SotL references.

To have 'dirt' on someone, it has to be something you know that the person wouldn't want others to know. And "Every time I try to explain myself, I only make matters worse" gives a strong impression that many people have asked Bill to explain himself. So, no 'dirt.'

The "every time I try to explain" could simply mean about his work in general. I agree that this doll alone doesn't really constitute dirt, but his phrasing doesn't neccessarily mean someone has seen it before.

I don't think it's a shameful secret on anyone's part. I mean, hell, a caster from another side knows how freaky Bill is! (looking at you, Ace)

More than anything, this hits me as a hobby Bill makes no real effort to hide, but also not one he brags about. I mean, the pit is in the dungeon, sure, but it's uncovered, and next to the wine. Not hidden behind locked doors or veils or whatever. And Bill doesn't make excuses, or try to cover it up, he just asks "Do you REALLY want to know?"

This strikes me as something people have stumbled over before and decided that they just don't want to think about it. Sort of like a noble wandering behind the stables and seeing the gardener knee deep in crap, rotting food and dead animals. The noble may have known about compost in an abstract way, but trying to get an explanation for "how it all helps the place look nice" out of the gardener, who does it by intuition and tradition? Just going to make everyone uncomfortable.

Ha! Better yet, pets that had died naturally, and the kids had buried in the back yard.

A Noble: Did you... did you DIG UP Mr Scruffles?!
Gardener: Well, he wasn't doing any good under the OAK! Much more useful under the rose bushes.

That is most profoundly right seeming. It is an elegant way of elucidating the impasse one so often strikes at the intersection of Leadership with Specialist.

"Just shut up and eat what Cook puts on the Table, you don't want to be there when Sausage is being made, if you hope to continue to enjoy Sausage afterwards". lol.

Y'know, in my mind y'all just stablished Bill as the most interesting Erfworld character ever. And that with only four lines so far.

I hope he returns often, for further fleshing out. So to speak.
